Polyamory
Polyamory
Polyamory — In simplest terms, the word polyamory means many loves, based on the prefix, poly (meaning many) and the root, Amor (meaning love). Essentially, it can also be defined as a person who is sexually, romantically, and emotionally involved in relationships with more than one person at the same time. How does loving more than one person work you might ask? There are several variations of the polyamorous lifestyle. For the most part, most polyamorous relationships are broken down into various levels of bonding. These bonds are commonly known as primary, secondary, or tertiary relationships. Primary partners have the strongest and deepest connections to each other. They may or may not be married. There is a high level of intimacy, commitment, sexual compatibility and attraction, communication, and energy within the couple. The primary partner is viewed as the priority relationship and is usually the ones to discuss the ground rules; they also share many responsibilities of the household. Secondary partners are usually closely involved with each other and offer emotional support, communication, time, sexual attention, and may satisfy one’s needs for intimacy or closeness. However, he or she is not given the same priority, level of energy or attention as the primary partner. Tertiary partners may have an emotional or sexual connection, although, there tends to be a low-level of commitment in this bonding level. The energy or attention given to the partner is sporadic, and he or she is not considered an essential part of one’s life. Even though needs can be met in tertiary relationships, there is no potential for long-term growth or commitment. In most cases, poly couples usually have their primary partner (the stem) and may decide collectively or individually to have other secondary or tertiary lovers (extended lovers). Another common style of polyamorous relationships includes a triad. The couple decides to bring in an additional person for the couple to share; they become a 3-person couple or triangle. A quad would mean the couple brings in two additional people.
