Coitus Interruptus

Coitus Interruptus

Another term for the “pull out” or “withdraw” technique. Two partners engage in coitus (“intercourse”) but the male “pulls out” before semen can be ejaculated into the vagina. Many medical experts view this as an ineffective method of birth control, which has been used for over 2,000 years by couples. It is estimated that around 22% of women who use contraception rely on the withdrawal method as their primary form of birth control.  The failure rate (as defined by number of pregnancies, is very high.

The use of coitus interruptus as a primary form of birth control is more common among people who have personal or religious beliefs that prohibit the use of other forms of birth control. It may also be used by people who are unable or unwilling to use other forms of birth control due to health concerns, access issues, or personal preference.

it is important to note that coitus interruptus is not a very effective form of birth control and does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Therefore, it is important for individuals who rely on coitus interruptus as their primary form of birth control to be aware of its limitations and to consider using additional forms of birth control or barrier methods to protect against unintended pregnancy and STIs. It is also recommended that individuals talk to their healthcare provider about their options for safe and effective contraception.

In modern day, thanks to science, there are many different types of effective birth control. For example: the pill, condoms, IUD, and the sponge. To know exactly which one is right for you, we strongly encourage you to make an appointment with a gyn. If you don’t already have one, Locate a GYN Doctor Each type of birth control has their own set of pros and cons.

Forms of birth control

The types of birth control for an individual depends on various factors, such as their health status, age, sexual activity, and personal preferences. Here are some effective forms of birth control that are commonly used:

  1. Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC): This includes methods such as intrauterine devices (IUDs) and hormonal implants, which are highly effective and require minimal maintenance.
  2. Hormonal methods: These include birth control pills, patches, injections, and vaginal rings, which contain hormones that prevent ovulation and thicken cervical mucus to block sperm.
  3. Barrier methods: This includes condoms, diaphragms, cervical caps, and spermicides, which work by physically blocking or killing sperm.
  4. Sterilization: This includes surgical procedures such as tubal ligation (for women) and vasectomy (for men), which permanently prevent pregnancy.
  5. Fertility awareness methods: This involves tracking menstrual cycles and identifying the fertile period to avoid intercourse or using barrier methods during that time.

It is important to note that no form of birth control is 100% effective, and each method has its own advantages and disadvantages. It is recommended that individuals discuss their options with a healthcare provider to determine which method is most suitable for their needs and preferences.

What to do if I get pregnant by accident?  First, if you don’t want to get pregnant use two forms of birth control.  For example, the woman could be on the birth control pill and the man could be using a condom.  The chances of getting pregnant while practicing coitus interruptis are pretty high.  If coitus interruptis is your birth control plan than you have essentially said you are open to becoming pregnant.  Again, if you don’t want to be pregnant, use two forms of birth control.  This decreases the chances of accidental pregnancy.

If you find yourself pregnant by accident, it is important to take some time to process your emotions and thoughts. Even if you are making a poor choice and having unprotected sex, it does not mean that you are truly ready to be pregnant and have a child.  If you find yourself accidentally pregnant, here are some steps you can take:

  1. Confirm the pregnancy: Take a pregnancy test and visit an obstetrician to confirm the pregnancy.
  2. Consider your options: Think about all of your options, including continuing the pregnancy and raising the child, adoption, or termination. It is important to make a decision that is right for you and your life. Some people believe that life begins at conception. Some people believe that life begins when the baby is born.  Some people have never thought about the question of when does life begin and simply think about the question of “Do I want to have a child?” as well as the question “Am I responsible enough to have a child?” Having a child is an enormous life changing decision.
  3. To help you know what is right for you and your situation, seek support: Talk to someone you trust about your feelings and concerns, whether it’s a friend, family member, or a healthcare provider. You can also seek support from a therapist at The Center For Growth, Inc 215 922 5683 x 100.  If none of our staff is licensed in your state, you can also seek counseling services from planned parenthood.  They work with women facing both planned and unintended pregnancies.
  4. Take care of your health: Take care of your physical and emotional health by eating well, staying hydrated, getting enough rest, and seeking medical care as needed.
  5. Plan for the future: If you decide to continue the pregnancy, start thinking about what you will need to prepare for the arrival of a new baby, including healthcare, housing, and financial resources. If you decide to terminate the pregnancy, talk to your healthcare provider about the procedure and aftercare.

Remember, this is your decision to make, and there is no right or wrong choice. Take the time you need to make an informed decision that feels right for you.
