Booty Call The phrase “booty call” is a slang phrase that can be used to describe an action, a person or a type of relationship organized around spontaneous sexual encounters.

Action When someone is making a booty call, it means they are calling someone to set up a spontaneous meeting for sex. Although this colloquialism is perhaps most often used to refer to calling a casual sex partner, it can be used to refer to anyone with whom the person is having sex. Although booty call has ‘call’ in the name, a booty call can be established through any means of communication (i.e. text, e-mail, IM, etc.).

Person When a person is referred to as a ‘booty call’ they are being identified as a potential sex partner. A regular booty call is someone who has been established as being available on more than one occasion, sometimes consistently, to meet. Although sometimes being a booty call is entered into knowingly, some don’t know they are considered booty calls. Although some only have one booty call, others will have many that they consider booty calls.

Type of Relationship Generally, a booty call relationship is a casual relationship based around sexual availability. Because most meetings are spontaneous in nature, it isn’t expected that a booty call will always be free to meet. It isn’t generally expected that two people engaged in a booty call relationship will be monogamous. Booty call relationships are not necessarily devoid of emotion and romance, but they can be. It is often understood that these elements are not important, nor central to the relationship.

Possible Benefits

• It is easier to establish subsequent meetings with someone one has already had sex with than it would be to try to find a new sex partner.
• There is a possibility of being able to experience sexual gratification without having to manage the complexities of emotions and/or romance.
• Because it’s by nature spontaneous, one can attempt to fill sexual needs as they arise.
• There can be a thrill involved in whether or not a booty call can set up a meeting.
• When the booty call relationship is overt, it is often as easy to reject a meeting as it is to accept one.

Possible Drawbacks

• Because the relationship is based in spontaneity, it may be difficult to coordinate schedules.
• For some, the emotional and/or romantic elements of a relationship are an integral part of sex, and if the booty call relationship lacks them, it may not be fulfilling.
• As sex can be a very intense act, there is a chance that one person may experience unreciprocated romantic emotions.
• The lack of emotional component can sometimes translate into a lack of care for the other person’s pleasure or a lack of respect for the other person.
• Because there isn’t always full disclosure of when someone is considered a booty call, there is the potential for the unaware party to be hurt.
