Asphyxiaphilia

Also known as asphyxiaphilia, hypoxyphilia or breath play, is a form of BDSM activity that involves the restriction of oxygen to the brain in order to achieve a heightened sexual arousal. This can be achieved through a variety of methods, such as choking, strangling, or the use of a device such as a hood or bag. Asphyxiaphilia is a sexual act during which one deprives themselves of oxygen in order to enhance the effect of orgasm. One can carry out asphyxiophilia by practicing self-strangulation, or through having a partner engage in the strangulation process. This can be accomplished in one of two ways: by participating in “breath play,” in which one partner becomes sexual aroused by continuing and discontinuing their partners’ normal breathing pattern, and by becoming sexual aroused by the light headedness that accompanies restricting oxygen to the brain. This can be achieved through a variety of methods, such as choking, strangling, or the use of a device such as a hood or bag. Asphyxiophilia should continue up until, but not include, loss of consciousness. Because of the extreme methods used to produce heightened sexual arousal, practicing asphyxiophilia can be fatal. We do not advocate this method. Proceed with caution.  Asphyxio philia  is considered a dangerous and potentially fatal practice, and should not be attempted by anyone without proper training, experience, and knowledge of the risks involved.

It’s also important to note that any BDSM activity should be consensual and safe, it should be practiced with informed consent, communication, and negotiation with a partner. It’s important to be aware of any physical and emotional limits, and to have a safe word or signal in case one partner wants to stop the activity.
