About Me
August 26th 2024- August 26th 2025
Hello there! I’m Rachel Hirsch, Social Work Intern Therapist at The Center For Growth. My journey into social work stems from a wholehearted passion for supporting my clients and providing them with the tools to thrive. I can’t wait to walk alongside you on this exploration, healing, and growth journey.
Education & Background
My academic journey commenced at Arcadia University, where I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design. Initially, I aspired to become a creative director for fashion magazines because I was captivated by the intersection of visual storytelling and fashion culture. However, even during my studies in graphic design, I found myself irresistibly drawn to exploring themes of mental health and the human condition with the secret dream of being a therapist.
Through my artistic projects, I delved into how design could express and address emotional experiences and psychological landscapes. This exploration laid the groundwork for my eventual shift toward a career in social work and therapy. I now channel my creative insights into helping others navigate their journeys.
After graduating from college, I embarked on a deeply transformative personal healing journey, discovering the profound impact of yoga and mindfulness. While these practices may not resonate with everyone, they became essential pillars of my well-being and personal growth.
Eager to explore a potential career in social work, I began working in Philadelphia schools as a behavior therapist. This role provided invaluable insights into family dynamics and systems, allowing me to witness firsthand the complex interplay of relationships and individual behaviors within families.
In my work with neurodivergent clients, both in educational settings and their homes, I had the opportunity to apply and refine my skills in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and other modalitlies of behavior therapy and mindfulness. These experiences not only deepened my understanding of CBT but also reinforced my commitment to supporting individuals navigating their unique strengths/challenges. Being a neuro-affirming clinician is of utmost importance to me.
Through these diverse roles, I developed a profound appreciation for the resilience and strength of the families and individuals I worked with, ultimately solidifying my decision to pursue a career in social work and therapy.
I am currently pursuing a Degree for a Master’s in Social Work (MSW). Throughout my studies, I have been immersed in coursework that covers a broad spectrum of topics essential to the world of social work. The courses I have taken have provided me with a comprehensive understanding of social determinants and factors that influence mental health and well-being.
In addition to my formal education, I have had the privilege of participating in various workshops and training sessions focused on trauma-informed care, drug and alcohol use, cultural humility, aging and race, CBT, and neuroaffirming care. These experiences have been invaluable in honing my skills and deepening my understanding of the complex dynamics that shape each client’s experience.
Experience & Special Interests
Before joining The Center for Growth, I had the rewarding experience of working as a Socialization Coordinator and Case Manager at Jewish Family and Children’s Services (JFCS). These roles allowed me to support older adults and individuals living with disabilities, where I found profound purpose and inspiration.
At JFCS, I was dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for older adults by developing and coordinating tailored socialization programs. These initiatives were designed to foster community, reduce isolation, and promote overall well-being. One notable program I organized was a comprehensive self-care series that focused on nurturing the mind, body, and soul. This included engaging sessions on art history followed by a hands-on collage activity to stimulate the mind, Tai Chi paired with Chai Tea to balance the body, and planting activities to reconnect with nature and nourish the soul.
In addition to these programs, I provided personalized case management services, helping clients navigate complex systems to access essential resources and support. This often involved assisting with healthcare coordination, housing arrangements, and social services, ensuring that each individual received the necessary comprehensive care.
One of my most fulfilling projects was organizing a Pride celebration for our older adult community, including LGBTQ+ individuals and their allies. This event was a joyful affirmation of their identities and contributions, fostering a sense of belonging and community pride. Seeing our clients embrace their stories and celebrate their lives alongside their peers and allies was truly heartwarming.
These experiences at JFCS were instrumental in deepening my understanding of the challenges faced by older adults and those with disabilities. They also reinforced my belief in the power of community and human connection in promoting health, happiness, and dignity.
Personal interests
In my personal time, I engage in a range of activities that keep me balanced and provide a fresh. It’s a refreshing escape that renews my spirit. Yoga, on the other hand, provides a space for mindfulness and physical wellness, helping me stay centered and grounded.
Above all, family, friends, community, and the pursuit of liberation are deeply integral to my life. They are always at the forefront of my thoughts and actions, guiding me in everything I do.
Therapeutic Approach
I am particularly interested in dialectic behavioral therapy (DBT), narrative therapy, and internal family systems theory. These approaches resonate with me because of their focus on understanding and changing thought patterns, their emphasis on the stories people tell about their lives, and their recognition of the family’s role in individual well-being. I am continually seeking to deepen my knowledge and skills in these areas through ongoing education and practice.
It is crucial to recognize and address the systemic barriers in America. There are barriers deeply rooted in historical and societal inequities that significantly impact mental health and access to care for many communities, specifically those who are LBTQIA and/or BIPOC. Acknowledging this reality is about being informed and actively dismantling these obstacles within our therapeutic practices. It’s about understanding that the experiences of discrimination, marginalization, and oppression can deeply influence an individual’s mental health and well-being. My role as a white queer Jewish therapist involves creating a space where these intersecting identities and challenges are seen, heard, and validated. This requires continuous self-reflection and education by, as well as advocating for equitable systems and practices within the mental health field and beyond. By committing to this work, I strive to foster an environment where clients in these communities feel safe, supported, and empowered.
In my practice, I adhere to a client-centered approach, which means that I believe each client is the expert on their own life. My role is to facilitate their exploration and growth, providing support and guidance along the way. This approach is rooted in respect, empathy, and a deep commitment to fostering a collaborative therapeutic relationship.
I integrate various therapeutic models into my work, tailoring my methods to the unique needs and circumstances of each client. For example, I draw on strengths-based, solution-focused, trauma-informed care. The strengths-based approach emphasizes clients’ existing resources and capabilities, helping them to build on these strengths to overcome challenges. Solution-focused therapy is centered on identifying and achieving specific goals, while trauma-informed care ensures that therapy is conducted in a way that is sensitive to the impact of trauma.
As part of my holistic approach, I deeply understand the interconnectedness of the body and mind. Mindfulness and deep breathing techniques are integral components of my therapeutic practice. These techniques not only foster relaxation and stress reduction but also enhance self-awareness and promote overall mental and emotional well-being. By incorporating mindfulness and deep breathing into my sessions, I aim to support clients in achieving a deeper sense of balance, clarity, and resilience in their lives.
Each of these models contributes to a comprehensive and flexible approach to therapy. By combining elements from different frameworks, I can offer personalized care that respects and addresses the complex, multifaceted nature of each individual’s experience.
