Heather is a masters level counselor with experience treating individuals struggling with substance abuse disorders, depression, anxiety, sexual and gender identity issues, trauma, shame, loss and bereavement. She also has a special interest in working with individuals who have experienced sexual abuse and other forms of trauma, sexual self esteem issues, infertility, affairs and infidelity, and intimate partner violence.
Heather utilizes a number of theories and frameworks in her work with clients, including psychodynamic, relational, humanistic and narrative approaches. Heather also utilizes ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) in her work with clients, which helps her to understand her clients motivations, identities, fears and hopes. Heather is interested in exploring the personal narratives of her clients, working alongside them to help expand and deepen their self-understanding. By providing a supportive, honest and non-judgmental space, Heather hopes to help clients access their own inner wisdom and overcome limiting experiences and patterns of behavior.
Heather received her Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Wake Forest University and Ph.D. in Philosophy from Loyola University of Chicago. She is currently working toward her license (LPC) at the Center for Growth, which she plans to obtain in 2022.
Beyond her experience as a therapist, Heather worked for a decade in higher education, promoting community-based learning and advocating for marginalized individuals and groups. She has taught university-level philosophy courses on the themes of happiness, ethics, human nature, and restorative justice. When she is not working, Heather enjoys spending time with her partner and two daughters, cooking, watching films, and generally trying to be creative (drawing/painting/photography).
