Vibrators
A vibrator is a type of sex toy with a motor that produces vibration.
Power Source: Vibrators generally have three different power sources: batteries, rechargeable batteries, and power-chords. Battery operated vibrators will generally be the least expensive vibrators, and also have a tendency to last the shortest amount of time (depending upon the brand). Vibrators with rechargeable batteries tend to be longer lasting than battery operated vibrators, but also tend to be more expensive. Vibrators that plug into an outlet with a power chord tend to provide the strongest level of vibration, and tend to last much longer than battery operated vibrators.
Materials: Vibrators come in porous (jelly-rubber, cyberskin), moderately porous (elastomer), and non-porous (silicone, vixskin, hard plastic) materials.
Infection Risk: If the vibrator is designed to be used internally, porous materials pose the risk of trapping infection-causing bacteria. Throughout the course of use, these bacteria have potential to cause infection in the vagina or rectum. For this reason, it is recommended that any porous toys being used inside the vagina or rectum are covered with a condom. Because moderately porous toys have fewer pores, the infection risk is still present, but decreased. Condom use is still recommended with moderately porous toys. Non-porous materials do not trap bacteria, and with regular cleaning, should pose no infection risk. Risk of infection due to trapped bacteria is negligible if the toy is only being used on the outside of the body.
Note: Regardless of whether or not a toy is porous, it is possible to spread Sexually Transmitted Infections if sex toys are being shared.
External Vibrators: Many vibrators (like bullets and wands) are designed for external use only. Some of these vibrators may be attached to a cock-ring set-up for partner use. Others may also come with attachments so that they can be used externally and internally at the same time. Any vibrator designed for internal use can also be used on the outside of the body.
G-Spot/P-Spot Vibrators: Any vibrator that has a pronounced curve at the end is generally designed for G-Spot and/or P-Spot (prostate) stimulation. However, if being used for P-Spot stimulation it is important that the toy has a flared base. If the toy does not have a flared base there is a risk that the toy can be pulled completely into the body (which could mean a trip to the emergency room for removal).
Twice-as-Nice Vibrators: Twice-as-Nice vibrators (The Rabbit) provide stimulation to the inside of the body and the outside of the body at the same time. Some twice as nice vibrators also have rotating heads that provide G-Spot stimulation.
Types of Vibration: Vibration can come in different intensities and pulses. Some toys provide only one or two intensities of continuous vibration, while others provide a continuum of vibration intensity levels ranging from low to high. Some vibrators, instead of having continuous vibration, will have short pauses, causing a pulsation effect. With some vibrators, you can scroll through continuous and/or pulsing vibration at different intensity levels.
Body Parts: For women, vibrators can feel especially good on the clitoris, labia, outer one third of the vagina, the perineum (the area between the vagina and the anus) and the G-Spot. Although vibration can feel good on the inner 1/3 of the vagina, the nerve endings on the outside of the body tend to have better response to vibration-like stimulation. For men, vibration can feel especially good on the head of the penis directly, on the head of the penis through the foreskin, on the frenulum, on the perineum (the area between the testicles and the anus), and on the P-Spot. Some men also enjoy vibration on the testicles, but as testicle sensitivity varies, it is a good idea to ask before using vibration there. Additionally, vibration can feel good on the outer ring of the anus on either men or women. Nipples, backs, necks, lips, and other parts of the body can also respond well to vibration.
Vibration Beginners: If new to vibration, it is recommended a user chooses an inexpensive vibrator with variable vibration intensity. Some vibration users can only handle light vibration, while others prefer vibration with stronger intensity. Buying a variable speed vibrator can help a user to understand what level they like, and once that is established they can purchase a toy specifically geared toward their preference. Additionally, an inexpensive toy will decrease buyers regret if, like some, the user doesn’t enjoy vibration or finds vibration uncomfortable.
Vibrators during Partner Play: Any vibrator can be used alone or with a partner. If introducing vibrators into partner play for the first time, a good idea is to start with a smaller vibrator (i.e. a bullet) or with a vibrator that is designed for both partners (i.e. the We Vibe, or a vibrating cock-ring). If one partner is resistant to the idea of using vibration, a possible strategy is to let the resistant partner choose the toy and/or allow the resistant partner to control how the toy is used the first time you incorporate it into play. Once both partners become comfortable with use of vibration, it may be possible to begin using different types of vibrators during play.
Water and Vibrators: Some battery operated vibrators are completely waterproof and can be submerged in water during use without risk of electrocution. Some vibrators are ‘splash proof’ and can’t be submerged, but water can get on them without risk of electrocution or ruining the toy. Read the packaging materials on the toy before using one in or near water.
Lubricant: Many enjoy using vibrators with water or silicone based lubricant, as it decreases friction between the body and the toy. Silicone lubricant should not be used with silicone toys, as a chemical reaction can occur and ruin the toy.
Vibrating Dildos: Although dildos are generally non-vibrating, there are some that have room for a small vibrator in the base of the dildo. Taking this vibrator out can result in the dildo feeling smaller during use, so if the user doesn’t want vibration, it is recommended that the vibrator be turned off, rather than removed.
Vibrator Maintenance: After use, batteries should be removed from the toy in order to prevent corrosion, and to prevent draining the battery if the toy accidentally turns on. Vibrators should be cleaned regularly. There are cleaning agents specifically made for toys, but a mild soap and water solution will also sufficiently clean a toy.
Note: Because vibrators have mechanical parts in them, they CANNOT be cleaned in the dishwasher, even if they are waterproof.
