Vaginal / Uterine Prolapse

What is Vaginal / Uterine Prolapse?
Due to weakness of the connective tissues of the pelvic floor, the uterus, vagina, bladder, or rectum can drop into the vaginal canal and even through the vaginal opening. Some women can feel a bulge or heaviness in the vaginal area, especially at the end of the day. Some women need to push this bulge upward in order to urinate or have a bowel movement. The medical term for this is “prolapse.” This is analogous to a hernia which can occur in the lower abdomen due to weakness of the abdominal wall.
Prolapse can result in problems affecting the organ which has prolapsed: urinary incontinence if the bladder has prolapsed, discomfort with pressure and a bulge, problems with bowel movements if the rectum has prolapsed, and sometimes bleeding if the tissue is exposed for too long.
When is it time to seek treatment?
If you find that you are making changes in your lifestyle because of your bladder, prolapse or bowel habits, it’s time to see what options are out there. None of these problems should control your life, money and time.
And you’re not alone – at least half of women over the age of 55 have one of these problems.
Based on your complete evaluation, your urogynecologist will recommend treatment specifically designed for your lifestyle. There will likely be a few options to choose from. The options may include non-surgical treatment such as pelvic floor exercises; oral, patch or intra-vaginal medication; devises to help elevate vaginal prolapse; or surgical therapy to correct anatomic defects.
Does this sound familiar? Are you ready to do something about these problems?
