Sensory Deprivation: Sex Dictionary

Developed by the Staff at Sex Therapy in Philadelphia

Sensory Deprivation

Sensory deprivation is when one sense is taken away during sexual play to enhance other senses.

Limiting Sight

Sight can be limited with accessories like blindfolds, scarves, neckties, bandanas, etc, or by placing a hand over a player’s eyes. The non-limited player can experiment with different levels of pressure, different kinds of touch, varied temperatures, different sounds, etc. to cater to the blindfolded player’s heightened sensitivity.

Safety: Because limiting sight requires one player to give some level of control to another partner, a base level of trust should be established before engaging in play. This can involve discussing boundaries and limits, as well as setting up a safe word before engaging in play. Verbal check-ins before, during, and after play can also ensure the emotional safety of the player whose sight is limited.

Limiting Ability to Speak Through the use of ball gags, socks, tape etc, someone’s ability to speak can be limited. This may require the person being gagged to use non-verbal forms of communication to express needs, or in the person being gagged consenting to allow the other player to control the session.

Safety: Because limiting ability to speak requires one player to give some level of control to another partner, a base level of trust should be established before engaging in play. This can involve discussing boundaries and limits, as well as setting up a physical motion (like a tap-out) that the player being gagged can use to stop play. It is important that whatever is being placed into the mouth does not completely obstruct the throat, as that may cut off the player’s air supply.

Limiting Touch

See ‘Bondage.’

Limiting Hearing Hearing can be limited through the use of ear plugs, ear muffs, etc or by placing hands over the player’s ears. The player whose hearing is not limited can try to non-verbally communicate commands, desires, or directions to the hearing limited player. In addition, this may require the partner whose hearing is limited to allow the other player to control the session.

Safety: Because limiting hearing requires one player to give some level of control to another partner, a base level of trust should be established before engaging in play. This can involve discussing boundaries and limits, as well as setting up a safe word before engaging in play. Additionally, ensure that anything being placed in the ear canal is designed for that use.
