Oral-Facial Herpes Approximately 50% - 80% of the adult population in the United States has oral-facial herpes (also known as cold sores and fever blisters), with as many as 90% having it by the age of 50. Most people contract oral-facial herpes as children from kissing a relative or friend with oral-facial herpes. With oral-facial herpes, the lesions typically appear on or around the lips, however, lesions can also appear on or inside the nose, on the chin, or on the cheek. Nearly all oral-facial herpes cases are the result of an HSV – 1 infection. It is important to note that herpes is often described by the location of the outbreaks (oral herpes or genital herpes), however both HSV-1 and HSV-2 can appear in either location. For example, it is possible to infect someone genitally with HSV-1, as well as possible to infect someone orally with HSV-2. Regardless of the site of your outbreaks, it is important to know which type of the herpes virus you have. A blood test can provide you with this information. Written by Tracy L. Wood M.Ed., LMFT |
