Exhibitionism

Exhibitionism Exhibitionism is when one derives sexual enjoyment from exposing body parts and/or being watched while engaging in a sexual act(s).

Flashing Flashing is a form of exhibitionism where one experiences sexual pleasure when they expose or reveal body parts considered sexual (i.e. breasts, genitals, etc.). Generally this practice is non-consensual, although there are venues where consensual “flashing” occurs (i.e. strip clubs, burlesque shows, etc.). When the flashing is non-consensual, sexual arousal may derive from surprising someone or from the thrill of potentially getting caught and/or punished for the flash.

Being Watched Although pleasure can be derived from the sexual activity itself, exhibitionism is marked by an increased sense of sexual arousal because of the possibility or actuality of being watched. Being watched can be consensual or non-consensual. Non-consensual exhibitionism of this kind happens when one or more people are engaging in sexual activity where unsuspecting others can see them (i.e. in front of an open window, in public, etc). Arousal from non-consensual exhibitionism may come from the thrill of potentially being seen, being caught, and/or being punished. Consensual exhibitionism happens when one or more people negotiate a time, place or setting to be watched. Negotiations can be done instantaneously in the moment or can be negotiated ahead of time. Consensual exhibitionism can also occur in venues designed for sexual play, like sex clubs. Although rules and expectations will vary at each venue, these clubs provide a consensual space for people to engage in exhibitionism.

Exhibitionist as an Identity Category Although widely defined as anyone who is confident and outgoing for the purpose of being watched, there are some who utilize the term “exhibitionist” specifically as a description of sexual identity. Doing so may aid in finding other exhibitionist partners or aid in finding voyeuristic companions for play.
