Asphyxiophilia

Also known as asphyxiaphilia. A sexual act during which one deprives themselves of oxygen in order to enhance the effect of orgasm. One can carry out asphyxiophilia by practicing self-strangulation, or through having a partner engage in the strangulation process. This can be accomplished in one of two ways: by participating in “breath play,” in which one partner becomes sexual aroused by continuing and discontinuing their partners’ normal breathing pattern, and by becoming sexual aroused by the lightheadedness that accompanies restricting oxygen to the brain. Asphyxiophilia should continue up until, but not include, loss of consciousness. Because of the extreme methods used to produce heightened sexual arousal, practicing asphyxiophilia can be fatal. We do not advocate this method. Proceed with caution.
